In the past, Tai Chi was used in China as a martial and healing art for over700 years. Class groups are small and everyone receives good individual attention. Master Chen focuses on accurate movements and the practical application of the moves. Beginners are most welcome.
Classes are held at two locations in East London :
Tai Chi Chuan is a martial art that was developed over 700 years ago. The original founder and father of Tai Chi is believed to be Zang San Feng, a Chinese Taoist. However, it is thought that the art is much older with elements and practices going back thousands of years. Today, it is primarily practised for its health benefits. Its movements are slow, elegant and beautiful. This ancient art has how evolved into five primary styles;
Chen Tai Chi beginnings date to the late 18th century and are attributed to the late Chen Fake of the Chen family. He developed and practised his own unique style of Tai Chi which was based on movements and forms that he learnt and practised with his Grandfather ChenChangxing. His unique style, came to be know as Chen Tai Chi which was originally developed to improve fitness, stamina and strength. Chen Fake became popular and was known as the master who could not be beaten in combat. His skills, attributed to his practice of Tai Chi, were legendary. He taught many students, some of which introduced changes and variation of moves and techniques developing their own styles. Chen Tai Chi is characterised by its explosive movements including jumps, kicks and strikes. Silk reeling-spiral movements that flow from the feet to the hands-is the foundation of Chen Tai Chi. Powerful stances develop strength and agility. Slow, graceful movements are alternated with quick, forceful ones. Chen Tai Chi can provide a good cardio workout, and encourage toning and elasticity in muscle and joints bringing the the body into equilibrium and balance. Chen Tai Chi forms can be executed in three different ways or practice methods, according to the students flexibility ' so it is suitable for students of all ages and physical ability. Low-level appeals to young practitioners and martial artists; the medium-level is suited to older students; high-level is suited to seniors and or students that have muscular, joint and impaired mobility problems.
Master Chen is a 22nd Generation Chen style Tai Chi disciple of Grand Master Grand Master Chen Xianwang
Yang style Tai Chi was founded by Yang Lu-ch’an. Yang style developed directly from the original Chen style-was greatly admired by the Chinese Imperial family. In 1850, the Imperial family hired Yang Lu-ch’an to teach his modified, less athletic adaptation to their elite palace guards. Yang Tai Chi improves flexibility by expanding and contracting the body using big, exaggerated movements executed slowly and gracefully.
Master Chen is a 7th Generation Yang style disciple of Master Fu Quing Quan and Master Peng Xie Hau. Fu Quing Quan studied Yang Style with his Grandfather renowened and greatly respected 4th Gemneration Grand Master Fu Zhongwen

Closely related to Tai Chi, Qi-gong focuses on breathing and movement techniques to focus one's life energy. These are practised together as part of the regular classes in a single setting. Tai Chi and Qi-gong are intrinsically connected.
Master Chen Hui was born in China. In his childhood, he has practised Chinese Kung Fu and Qi-Gong. In 1985, he begun studying Finance and Economics at Guangzhou University. There, he practised Tai Chi through the Sport department where he learned the 24 and 48 form Yang Style Tai Chi, as well as the 32 sword form and push hands techniques. Much of his spare time was dedicated to the practice of Tai Chi and Qi-Gong. Master Chen participated in many WuShu and Tai Chi competitions and was recognised for his skills winning many competitions and Tournaments.
After graduating and while working, he continued learning the traditional Yang style under guidance of Master Xue Hai Peng (5th generation of Yang style) for four years. From 1994, he continued deepening his understanding of the Yang Style with Master Qing Quan Fu (6th generation of Yang style) for three years. In 1997 he started to learn the Chen style of Tai Chi from Master Shao Lei Chen (21st generation of Chen style) for five years.
He then progressed to establish the "Chen Hui Academy of Tai Chi Chuan" in 2000 in China, where over the course of three years he taught over 1000 students. He moved to the United Kingdom in 2003 and established the "Chen Hui International Academy of Tai Chi Chuan" in East London which is now open for group and private classes. In November 2015, he was made a disciple of Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang, 19th generation lineage heir of Chen family Tai Chi Chuan. He is also a Tai Chi instructor at the "Lewisham Indo-Chinese Community & The Chinese Community" in London.

Although everyone is welcome and may join classes at any point, it is recommended that beginners join the foundation programme which is aimed at covering basic Tai Chi exercises, movements and techniques and developing a good understanding, knowledge and abilty to execute the old 18 frame. Chen Hoi Tai Chi offers a discounted rate for beginners (see pricing schedule).
The intermediate class focuses on perfecting the 18 old frame Lou Jia Yi lu and transitioning to the 74 old frame.
Advanced classes are available to intermediate students that have completed the Lao Jia Yi Lu 18 and 74 old frame and are able to execute it correctly. The advanced classes focus on building the inner knowledge of each frame and learning the second frame Lao Jia Er Lu (also known as cannon fist), the martial applications of each sequence and moves, pushing hands and later new frame and weapon frames and techniques.
Master Chen also regularly teaches children in schools or clubs. See twitter for recent media. Please contact Chen Tai Chi to discuss sessions, teaching or practice in your school or community.
For indoor lessons, I recommend you bring loose comfortable trousers. Ideally you should wear comfortable lightweight (non-bulky) gym shoes (A google image search for " tai chi shoes" will give you an idea -- bring anything remotely similar you already have).
For outdoors, you should also take something with you in case the weather gets windy or colder.

I tried learning Tai Chi before with other schools and it never clicked. Master Chen Hui still focuses on the health aspects, but is always mindful of the martial application. This gives grounding, sense and purpose to what can otherwise be perceived as quite abstract. I've learned more in one lesson than I had previously in five.

I have been a student with Master Chen for years. He knows his Tai Chi and he is a dedicated practitioner. Always helpful and patient. Probably the best Tai Chi classes in London.
